Gail Vehslage
Gail Vehslage is beginning her 20th season with CYSO. In addition to conducting the Junior and Senior flute ensembles, she founded and conducts a large adult flute ensemble that has won national recognition. Her varied musical career has included being an orchestral performer, chamber musician, private flute instructor, music camp director and High School Band and Orchestra conductor. Her students have won numerous scholarships to prestigious conservatories and schools of music.
Gail Vehslage received her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory, studying with William Hebert, and her Master's Degree in Flute Performance from San Diego State University, studying with Roger Stevens. She has pursued additional graduate study in flute performance with renowned teachers, Ransom Wilson, Julius Baker, Betty Bang Mather, Damien Bursill-Hall and William Grass. Ms. Vehslage has performed as Principal flute with the Hawaii Philharmonic, the Hawaii Chamber Orchestra, the San Diego Opera Orchestra, the Santa Cruz Symphony and the Hidden Valley Chamber Orchestra in Carmel, California. She has recorded two flute and classical guitar compact discs. Formerly, Ms. Vehslage served as Instrumental Music Director at South River High School. For nine years she taught band, orchestra and chamber music, establishing award winning programs.
Currently Ms. Vehslage is an active freelance performer in the Baltimore-Washington area and has performed for many years with the Annapolis Chamber Players, Crosswinds Chamber Ensemble and Classical Faire. She is the founder and director of the Chesapeake Flute Consort, and the Flute Fever Summer Music Camp. As well as conducting two flute ensembles for the Chesapeake Youth Symphony, she maintains a large private flute studio. Ms. Vehslage has been included in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers."
